FAQ

  • How much is this first visit going to cost me?

A: At Royal Oak Dental, we strive on providing the best patient care out there. We take first visits seriously, after all first impressions are important! The first visit will likely include a dental examination, along with teeth cleaning. We take most forms of insurance, as well as provide financial payment plans for those who do not have insurance. Affordable, professional care.

  • Do you treat children?

A: Yes! Here at Royal Oak Dental, we can treat children as young as 3. It is important to start dental care as soon as your child is able to. Regular visits to the dentist, along with biannual teeth cleanings will set your child up for success and cause far less issues when growing into adulthood.

  • Are you accepting new patients?

A: Yes! Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are accepting new patients. So call now, and get the care you need.

  • Do you offer tooth colored fillings? Can they replace my old metal fillings?

A: Yes. We offer tooth-colored fillings that will have the exact same color in order for your smile to look aesthetically pleasing.

  • Do I need to arrive early for my first appointment?

A: Patients should arrive at least 10 minutes before their appointment in order to complete filling out paperwork. However, patients may also complete their paperwork through our website, www.RoyalOakDental.com. Simply submit your information and it will be securely delivered into our system. This will save you time and the hassle of having to fill out paperwork when you first arrive.

  • What should I do if I require premedication?

A: Patients should take their medication 1 hour prior to their appointment. Alternatively, we can call your pharmacy and fill your medication if needed.

  • What do I need to bring to my first appointment?

  • How often do I need to go to the dentist?

A: It is recommended that adults see a hygienist for a teeth cleaning and a dental examination at least twice a year. For patients with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, additional cleanings per year may be suggested.

  • What should I do if I knock out an adult tooth?

A: First control any bleeding, then find the adult tooth which was knocked out. Immediately reinsert the adult tooth gently back into the socket in the correct position. Bite down on a wad of gauze or cloth to stabilize the tooth and seek immediate care by seeing your dentist. (Note: if you cannot reinsert the

tooth for a reason, it is important the tooth be kept moist by placing it in milk or in your mouth next to your gum). In order to save the adult tooth, it is important that you see your dentist as soon as possible.

  • Why do I need fluoride?

A: Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water. Fluoride minerals can help replace the minerals that are naturally lost in a tooth’s enamel layer through a process called remineralization. Everyday, minerals are lost from a tooth’s enamel layer when acids – formed from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth – attack the enamel.

  • Are dental x-rays safe?

A: While dental x-rays involve radiation, the radiation levels are so low that they are considered safe for children and adults! It is recommended to get x-rays of your teeth during every cleaning to make sure your teeth are as perfect as they can be.

  • What are some signs I should see a dentist?

A: Here are some signs that may indicate it is time to see your dentist: tooth pain or swelling, swollen, sore, or inflamed gums, an injury to the mouth, white spots on your teeth or gums, sores on your lip, sensitivity to hot or cold fluids/foods, dry mouth, headaches or soreness from grinding your teeth.

  • I am not having any symptoms, do I still need to see a dentist?

A: Yes! Even if you do not have any symptoms, you could still have dental problems that only a trained dentist could diagnose. Regular visits to your hygienist will also keep your teeth clean and healthy.

  • What can I expect during a dental checkup?

A: During a dental checkup, each tooth will be x-rayed and looked at by our trained and certified hygienists, as well as Dr. Gilbert himself. They will also look at your gums to look for signs of swelling which indicates gingivitis, as well as your tongue to look for any signs of oral cancer. We also offer Oral ID, a hand held light instrument which helps detect abnormalities in your mouth such as oral cancer.
